It is with great sadness and very heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mr. William Bill Washington, Sr., 89, of Holly Hill, South Carolina, a beloved husband, father, and grandfather who transitioned on Monday, October 28, 2024, in Orangeburg, South Carolina. The family will be accepting visitors beginning on Wednesday, October 30th, from 3:00 pm - 8:00 pm daily at 2274 Branchdale Highway, Holly Hill, South Carolina. Please adhere to all COVID-19 precautions and guidelines when visiting the family and funeral home.
Remembering "Bill"
William (Bill) Washington, Sr. was born on August 26, 1935, in Eutawville, SC. He was the son of the late Annie Washington and James White, and was called to be with God on Monday, October 28, 2024, at the Medical University of SC, Orangeburg, SC.
He grew up in the Eutawville Community and was educated in the local schools of Orangeburg County. In 1954, he married Helen Smalls and relocated to New York where he was employed at Belmount Horse Racetrack. In 1956, he returned to South Carolina and was employed with Lucien Laurin's Horse Racetrack for several years driving trucks and worked with Banks Construction where he retired after working over 40 years. He received many awards including the "Man of the Year Award" in 1994 for Union Hill Baptist Church. In August 1999 he became a founding member of the Eleventh-Hour Baptist Church where he served as head trustee, sang on the male chorus, and was installed as the Father of the Church in 2007. He was called "Mr. Fix-It" for his skillful work and was always known to be a hardworking man.
Mr. Bill was a God-fearing man that enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren, and family, watching western movies and wrestling. He was always willing to help others. His bright eyes and smile brought sunshine to every room he entered.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Annie Washington and James White, two sisters Reatha Washington and Annie (Charles) Witherspoon, a brother, Sam Washington, and one granddaughter Kamika Fogle.
Mr. Bill leaves to cherish his memories, his devoted wife of 71 years, Helen Washington of the home; five children, William "Billy" (Geneva) Washington, Jr., Joyce (Edward) Fogle, Sheila Williams, Fredrick (Althea) Washington, all of Holly Hill, SC and Geraldine Abraham, Irmo, SC; three brothers, Henry (Mary) Washington, Summerville, SC, Robert (Stella) Washington, and Andrew Washington, both of Eutawville, SC; 11 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He will forever be missed.
