It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Mr. Walter L. Goodwin Sr., 81, of Vance, South Carolina, who transitioned on Thursday, August 7, 2025, at MUSC Health Hospital in Orangeburg, SC. Please adhere to all COVID-19 precautions and guidelines when visiting the family and the funeral home. Masks are recommended, but not required.
Walter Lee Goodwin Sr. Life Reflections
Walter Lee Goodwin Sr. was born on July 4,1944 in Vance, South Carolina. He departed this life for his eternal home on Thursday, August 7,2025 at MUSC Health Hospital in Orangeburg, SC.
He was proceeded in death by his parents, Mr. Whitaker Goodwin and Mrs. Lula Goodwin-Powell, stepfather, Jessie Powell Sr; five brothers, James “Bree” Goodwin, Robert “Pint” Goodwin, Benjamin “Benny” Goodwin Sr, Willie Goodwin, and Franklin “Jerome” Goodwin; one brother-in-law, Melvin Ash; sisters-in-law, Lula Bell “Bell” Goodwin and Dorothy ”Dot” Goodwin; uncles, Robert “Rob” White, Nathaniel White, Benjamin ”Ben” White, Daniel “Danny” White, and Bishop Griffin; aunts, Maybell “Doggy” Joesph, Julia M. White, Rosa “Monkey” White, and Janie White.
At an early age, Walter Lee joined Live Oak A.M.E. Church. He was a family man who loved God, family and friends, often the life of the gathering.
Walter Lee was a go getter, after graduating from Roberts High School in 1962.
He set sights on providing for his family and moved to New York, where he worked various jobs to include, a truck driver’s assistant (carpet), and a delivery driver. It was there he found his passion to become a commercial truck driver.
On August 20,1966, he married his soulmate Peggy Ann.
Walter Lee returned to Vance, South Carolina to live in 1986. He worked for several trucking companies, making new friends at Santee Cement Carriers, Bulldog Hi-way Express, McGill Carriers and ultimately, purchasing his own Freightliner (Kenmore) and leasing to Smith Trucking, traveling often from one state to another, Walter Lee retired in 2006.
Walter Lee leaves to cherish his memories: his devoted wife of 58 years, Peggy Ann of the home; a daughter, Carol Ann (Michael) Brown of Bowman, SC; a son, Walter Lee Jr. of the home; three granddaughters, two great grandchildren; two sisters, Genevieve G. Ash of Santee, SC and Geralease (John) Green of Vance, SC; one brother-in-law, Wilbert A. (Vera) Patron Jr. of Summerset, NJ; two sisters-in-law, Annie Goodwin of Oklahoma City and Juanita Lynch of Brooklyn, NY; one aunt, Leona Griffin of Santee, SC; adoptive son, Daron Jamison of St. George, SC, and one God son, Danell Fuller.
