Susan H. Wright Life Reflections

"I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness…” – 2 Timothy 4:7-8

Susan H. Wright, affectionately known as “Sue,” was born on May 4, 1954, in Vance, South Carolina, to the late Clarence Howell Sr. and Ethel Lee Howell. On Tuesday, July 29, 2025, Sue peacefully transitioned from labor to reward, surrounded by the love and comfort of her devoted family.

Sue’s spiritual foundation was established early in life. She was baptized at a young age and became a member of First Baptist Church in Vance, South Carolina. Later, she joined Liberty Hill Baptist Church, where she faithfully continued her walk with Christ. Her life reflected the words of Matthew 5:16: “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”

Educated in the public schools of Orangeburg County, Sue graduated from Roberts High School, Class of 1973. In 1976, she was joined in holy matrimony to Nathaniel Wright, and their union was blessed with one beloved son, Andre Demond Wright.

Sue worked diligently for 13 years at the Ramada Inn in Santee, South Carolina, where her warm demeanor and commitment to excellence touched both colleagues and guests alike. However, her true calling and greatest joy were found in her role as a devoted wife, mother, and homemaker. She meticulously cared for her home, creating an atmosphere of love and peace where all who entered felt welcomed.

Sue’s nurturing spirit extended beyond her immediate family. She passionately assisted in rearing several of her nieces and nephews, including George Washington Jr. (Rocio), Koketta Washington Bailey (Willis), and Elijah O. Washington, who preceded her in death. She also lovingly raised her great nephew Akeem O. Mack until adulthood. To each of them, she was more than an aunt; she was a second mother, counselor, and friend.

Sue found delight in gardening, writing heartfelt letters, traveling, and most importantly praising the Lord. Her passion for the Word of God was evident as she found joy in teaching God’s Word to those she encountered, encouraging their faith through scripture particularly Psalm 23 and John 3:16, which served as guiding lights throughout her life. She loved to fellowship with the saints of God and was known for her encouragement and unwavering faith.

Sue’s life was one of humility, grace, and quiet strength. She leaves to cherish her precious memories her devoted husband, Nathaniel Wright., and her beloved son, Andre Demond Wright of the home. She is also survived by her loving siblings: loving devoted sister, Elizabeth H. Washington of Vance, SC, who compassionately cared for Sue during her illness; Clarence Howell (Mattie) of Waldorf, MD; Nathaniel Howell (Bernice) of Santee, SC; Geneva Fuller (Harry) of Bridgeport, CT; Rachel Williams of Goose Creek, SC; and Viola Samuel of Plainfield, NJ.

She is also lovingly remembered by two brothers-in-law, Paul Wright (Diane) of Piscataway, New Jersey and Richard Wright of Eutawville, SC; six sisters-in-law, Verdell Oliver, Ella Mae Watson (Willie), Ruth Wright, Linda Mintz (Bernard) of Eutawville, SC, Thelma Johnson of Summerton, SC, and Gloria Wright of Roanoke, VA; a beloved god-daughter Nicole Washington; cherished great-niece, Ke’Niyah L. Bailey; and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends who will forever treasure her memory and the love she so freely gave.

Though Sue has departed from this earthly life, her light continues to shine in the lives she touched. We rejoice knowing she is now resting in the eternal presence of the Lord she so faithfully served.
