Sam Pinckney Life Reflections
Mr. Sam Pinckney, son of the late Sampson “Strongman” Pinckney and Martha Green-Pinckney was born on February 28, 1944, in Cross, SC. He departed his earthly life on February 15, 2025, at Trident Regional Hospital in North Charleston, SC.
Sam, also known as the “Mayor of Cross” but better known as the “Chicken and Fish Man”, was a very hard and dedicated working man who held many job titles. He served 10 years with the Paper Mill in Charleston, SC and 38 years with the Berkeley County School District, where he worked as a kitchen aide, bus driver, head of the maintenance department and served on the summer lunch program. He also spent time as a Mosquito Control Technician for the Tri-County community.
At an early age, he became a member of Jehovah A.M.E. church and served as the treasurer on the Trustee Board, president of the Senior Usher Board, Sons of Allen, Jehovah Male Chorus and Class Leader. He was also the custodian of the church and assisted with the kitchen committee. Sam was a member of the Jehovah Lodge #351, Jeddah Temple #160 and the Robert Shaw Consistory #220 (Orangeburg, SC). He became a member of Al-Aziz Temple #259 from 2018 to present.
Sam had many hobbies which included: baseball, softball (Cross Bandits), fishing, Boyscout Troop Leader, driving the tractor and mowing the lawn. But as many may know, his true passion was cooking, and his favorite football team was the Miami Dolphins. Sam served as a Grand Marshall for the Dr. Martin Luther King Parade and was recognized as the Berkeley County Legend in 2024, a volunteer for the Cross Fire Department, an active member of the Cross Community Wildlife Center, Jehovah Father of the Year 2004 and served as a member of the Cross Band Booster.
Sam served as a great humanitarian all over for many, many years.
Sam was a husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother and friend. He was loved by many, many people and will physically give you the shirt off his back. His favorite saying was “hello somebody” and “snot nose”.
Sam was joined in holy matrimony to Maggie Mae Davis on August 20, 1966, and have been married for 58 years.
William Pinckney, Nancy Ferguson, Rosalee Witherspoon, Wesley Pinckney Sr., and Abraham Issac Pinckney have all preceded him in death.
Those left to cherish his loving memories are: his loving wife Maggie D. Pinckney; 7 children, Charles (Sherri) Brown, Gertie Dingle, Samuel (Barbara) Pinckney, Felicia Middleton, Adrian Pinckney, Tremonia Pinckney-Gavin and Sherida Pinckney all of Cross, SC; twenty-one grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren; three brothers, Jessie Pinckney of Miami, FL, Fishmond Sanders and Richard Pinckney of Cross, SC; four sisters, Martha (James) Spann, Mary R.
