Rev. Herbert C. Berry Smith, went home to the Lord on Tuesday, December 06, 2022, at age 90.
Herbert was born to Joe and Hester Fuller Smith, on October 28, 1932, in Eutawville, South Carolina. He attended schools in both Vance and Eutawville, South Carolina.
As a young man, Herbert was quite industrious; working in the fields, as well as assisting close family members as he tended to their children.
Herbert met his wife, Hattie Mae Montgomery in their early teens. They were blessed with a daughter, Debra Ann in 1956. They resided in Baltimore, Maryland, and Brooklyn, New York and later relocating to Vance, South Carolina, upon retirement,
In addition to being a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Herbert spent his most productive employment years at Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). His exceptional quality of workmanship garnered him accolades and a great promotion.
He enjoyed fishing and often reminisced about his times fishing with his grandmother, Carrie Smith, and his siblings. Herbert loved viewing television courtroom dramas and game shows, Herbert relished the times spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a loving, dependable and spiritual force in the lives of his family.
After witnessing his wife, Hattie Mae's transformation as a believer, Herbert's faith and belief led him to accept Jesus Christ as his personal savior. The Word states in 1 Peter 3: 1-6 " How a husband may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives." He joined Pilgrim Church in Brooklyn, New York under the leadership of Reverend Roy E. Brown.
In July 1995, he obtained a license to preach, under the leadership of Reverend James E. Council of Springfield Baptist Church in Eutawville, South Carolina.
Herbert attended Carolina Theological Bible Institute and Morris College School of Religion. He was ordained on Sunday, November 08, 1998, under the leadership of Reverend John Williams, Jr., of Springfield Baptist Church in Eutawville, South Carolina.
He suffered medical hardships, most would not have endured. Many viewed him as a role model. Herbert forever maintained a smile, loved telling jokes, and enjoyed a good laugh.
One of his favorite sayings was "give me my flowers, while I can smell them."
He was preceded in death by his parents, several siblings, his daughter Gerold L. Person Wallace
He leaves to cherish his life: His devoted wife Hattie Mae Smith and their daughter Debra Ann Smith. Grandchildren: Tareasha Kelley, Ronald Brandon (Shahkara) St. John, Ashley (John ) Wilson, Tanzania Wallace, and Carlos Wallace. Daughter Tanya(Issac) Baffour, Grandchildren: Quashanna Stephens, Justin Robinson, Sadie Smith, Saniya Smith. Great Grandchildren: Bryce St. John, Chase Jared Kelley, Justin Kelley, Nahier Kelley, Javon St. John, Kennedi Wilson, Chance St. John, Caiyla Wallace, Corion Wallace, and Londyn Wallace; Sisters: Martha Pinckney, Lula Myers, Annette Wiggins, Sister-in-law: Rose M. Goodwin, Delores Smith, Brother-in-law: Ellick Montgomery.
