Nemiah Howell Obituary

Nemiah Howell Life Reflection

“Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal.” Richard Puz

Nemiah Howell’s journey on earth began on December 2, 1940, in his hometown of Cross, South Carolina as the eldest son of Peter George Howell and Evelena Howell until the Lord peacefully called him home at 81 years of age on Monday, August 1, 2022, in Newnan, GA. While growing up, he was fondly known as “Bubba” to his siblings.

After his graduation in 1959 from Central High School in Cross, SC, he moved to Bronx, NY, where he would reside from 1959 - 1976. Although Nemiah met his beloved wife the former Wilhelmena Ravenell in middle school, they would reconnect, start dating, and fall madly in love with one another during his time in New York. They were married and made their union official on July 6, 1963, and three beautiful children would be born: Dwayne, Reginald, & Vanessa.

He was a visionary leader who held family and faith in high regard, and nothing was more important to him than the love of his life and his children. In 1976, Nemiah and Wilhelmena moved back to Cross, South Carolina to raise their family. After their move back home, they rejoined Unity Missionary Baptist Church, where he sang in the Male Chorus.

Nemiah was a gentleman amongst gentlemen, a family man, and a devoted friend who loved to crack a good joke. His presence would light up the room wherever he’d go. This was never more evident than when he was with his family and friends, especially his lodge brothers. He was a proud and faithful member of Jehovah Lodge #351 up until his passing.

With ambition, honesty, and dedication, he gladly accepted a position with General Dynamics as a welder for several years. He transitioned to Albany International as a Felt Dryer Machine Operator and worked tirelessly until his retirement in 2003.

After retirement, Nemiah enjoyed traveling to visit his children/grandchildren and cruising on the deep blue seas. He loved sitting in his favorite chair reading and doing crossword puzzles. His favorite shows were “Wheel of Fortune” and “Jeopardy,” which he religiously watched. Traveling abroad (Bahamas, Hawaii) with his wife, enjoying Clemson Tiger Football games, and watching his Pittsburgh Steelers play was at the top of his leisure list. Nemiah also enjoyed working in his yard, vacationing with his children, and grilling for his family. He never missed a Grandparents’ Day, sporting event, or graduation for his grandchildren.

Instilled with a strong sense of character, commitment, and charm from a child, there was nothing that Nemiah stated that he didn’t believe in finishing and giving his all to. It was those attributes, along with the importance of a good education that he would pass on to his children and grandchildren.

His father, Peter George Howell; mother, Evelena Howell; sister, Carrie Small; brother, Sammie Howell; and son, Dwayne Howell, Sr. preceded him in death. Precious memories to celebrate his enduring legacy are left with his wife of 59 years, Mrs. Wilhelmena Howell; son, Reginald Howell (Tammie) of Columbia, SC; daughter, Vanessa Scott (Carl) of Shreveport, LA; daughter-in-law, Neather Howell; godson, Dr. Charles Major, Jr.; siblings, Julia Manigault of Goose Creek. SC, Rev. Jimmie (Almeta) Howell of Cross, SC, Rosa (Joe) Smalls of Goose Creek, SC, Elijah Howell of Cross, SC, Margaret Major of Lilburn, GA, George Howell of Cross, SC, and, Valerie Miller of Bronx, NY; grandchildren: Alicia Howell, Koshia Simmons (Jerrod), Camellia Howell, Tre'von Nemiah Howell, Taylor Howell, Dwayne Howell, Jr., Morgan Philip, and Rian Philip; great-grandchildren: Aubree Howell and Braylon Simmons; and a host of sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends whom he dearly loved.
