Nathaniel Jakes Obituary

Nathaniel Jakes was known as (Bubba) (Nook) born on July 6, 1933 to the late Willie and Azalee Jakes. He joined Live Oak AME Church in Vance, South Carolina at an early age. Nathaniel was a faithful servant; he was a member of the choir and Sunday school.

He received his former education from Bull School Elementary, Vance, SC and Elloree Training High School, Elloree, SC.

Nathaniel moved to Washington, DC in 1957 and became a dedicated member of Delaware Avenue Baptist Church for over forty plus years where he was chairman of the deacon ministry.  He was also a member of the Male Chorus, a Sunday School Teacher and devoted attendee to Bible Study. Nathaniel had the most amazing voice you could hear him singing hymns like Blessed Assurance or Old Rugged Cross.

After leaving Delaware Baptist Church in 2008, Nathaniel joined Salem Baptist Church, NW Washington, DC., under the leadership of the late Pastor Alonzo D. Hart, Jr.,  At Salem, Nathaniel continued his journey to follow Christ and serve as a member of the Deacon ministry, Male Chorus, and he was faithful in attending Bible Study and Sunday school.

In 1953, Nathaniel was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Catherine Thomas, two children from this union were born, James Jakes (preceded him in death) and a devoted and loyal daughter Phyllis Jakes.

Nathaniel was employed by Crowne Furniture Store as a salesman and then promoted to lead salesperson. He then became manager of Accounting and later decided to transfer to the Trucking Department as a Driver. After leaving Crown Furniture, Nathaniel was employed by D.C. Public Schools as a committed server after a short time he was promoted to maintenance supervisor at Terrell Junior High School in NW, DC where he retired after 31 years of diligent service.

Nathaniel had a true love for sports; he was a Washingtonian at heart when it came to the Washington Football Team, Washington Nationals, Washington Wizards, etc. He also enjoyed going fishing with his longtime friends unto his health wouldn't allow him to do so. Nathaniel love and adoration for Family will be missed; he relished the opportunities he had to spend with his children, grandchildren and loved ones! Nathaniel character was one of a kind, genuine soul, willing to assist anyone!

We love a genius for what he leaves and mourn him for what he takes away.
