Mary Jane Rogers Ramsey's Life Reflections

Mary Jane Rogers Ramsey, beloved daughter of the late Willie Rogers and Elizabeth “Maggie” Spann, was born on September 25, 1928, in Cross, South Carolina. She peacefully entered into eternal rest on May 31, 2025, at her home. Raised in the Cross community, Mary Jane attended Eadytown School through the eighth grade.

On December 2, 1948, she married the late Elick Ramsey and was blessed with six children in their union. In addition, she had two more children. She was preceded in death by three of her children: Melvin, Betty “Georgianna,” and Sylvester, as well as her siblings Louis Rogers, David Rogers, and James Jenkins.

She was a member of Antioch Holiness Church for many years and was so happy to develop long lasting relationships with everyone.  After a few years, she joined Berkeley Church of Christ on August 7, 1982, where she was baptized under the leadership of Bro. Jack McNeil. In her church family, she was truly a one-woman show, serving on numerous committees including visitation, benevolence, evangelism, and kitchen ministries.

Known for her famous words, “Be real,” Mary Jane’s greatest love was for God. She devoted herself to sharing God’s word and love with everyone she met.

She is survived and deeply mourned by her children: Herman Ramsey, Lester Ramsey (Dollene), and Tyra Ramsey (Jason) of Cross, SC; Alex Ramsey (Sharon) of Columbia, SC; Tyrone Ramsey (Frances) of Manhattan, NY; and Anthony Ramsey of Charlotte, NC. She also leaves behind her brother-in-law, Julius Bennett (Katrina) of Cross, SC; two nieces and a nephew she cherished as her own—Charles Ravenell (Helen) of Cross, SC, Jeanette Ravenell of Hanahan, SC, and Yvonne “Terry” Washington (James) of Manhattan, NY; and a beloved cousin she regarded as a granddaughter, Lashonda Walker Barnes (Nate) of Fayetteville, NC.  Mary Jane was deeply loved by her church family and held close her church sons, whom she would do anything for: Mike Heyward (Brenda), Howard Brown (Rosalind), and Arnold Bennett (Bunnie) of Moncks Corner, SC. She was also cared for with great love and dedication by Lillie Porter and Evangeline Freeman until the end.

Her legacy lives on through twenty-four grandchildren, fifty great-grandchildren, twenty-seven great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Mary Jane Rogers Ramsey will be forever remembered for her faith, her love, and her unwavering commitment to family and community.
