Mary Leigh Obituary

Mary Jane Prioleau-Leigh of Pineville, SC was born on August 3, 1949, in Pineville, SC. She was the youngest child of Robert and Rena Mae Prioleau. She returned home to the Lord on April 23, 2022, at Trident Hospital in Moncks Corner, SC.

Mary Jane attended school in South Carolina, graduating from Central High School as the class valedictorian in 1966. During her time in school, she was a member of the basketball team, the yearbook staff, and the commercial club. She was also recognized as “Best Dressed” and “Most All Around.”  After graduation, she moved to NJ and was employed by NJ Bell as a telephone operator.  She went on to work at the Kearny, NJ post office as a clerk, where she was promoted to Maintenance Control Clerk. It was there that she met the love of her life, John Charles Leigh, whom she wed on August 8, 1970. To this union, they were blessed with three children: Tracey (Charles) Jones of East Windsor, NJ, Corey (Nalini) Leigh of Colonia, NJ, and Robin Leigh of St. Stephen, SC. Mary Jane took a break from working to stay home and raise her three children. She returned to the workforce when they were older, beginning a new career in foodservice at Greenbrook Manor Nursing Home. She eventually retired as a Food Service Director before returning home to her roots in Pineville, SC.

Mary Jane, who was also affectionately known as “Flint” enjoyed having a good time with her family and friends. She could often be found on the porch, or in past years under “the tree in the yard” enjoying a cold Budweiser and a Marlboro cigarette. Everyone knew of her love for Motown music, with Otis Redding and The Four Tops being her favorites!  She also loved doing crossword puzzles, and in recent years found a new passion for playing Words with Friends with anyone who accepted her invitation to play! She especially enjoyed spending time with her husband John, and their grandchildren, who loved visiting their “Grandma Mary” and “Pop Pop John”.

She was predeceased in death by her grandmother, Janie Spann, parents, Robert and Rena Prioleau, and brothers Robert Prioleau, Jr, and Leon Spann.

She is survived by her Grandchildren: Tiffany Hill, Tamara Hill, Corey Nazir Leigh, Jasmine Leigh, Jaiden Leigh, Amiya Leigh, Devon Elliston, Jr. Charles Jones III, Zhe’Maiyah Jones, and one great-grandson Aubrey Gregory. One sister, Rosa Lee Griffin, special nieces Karema Griffin, and Monika Griffin, as well as a host of additional nieces and nephews who will also greatly miss her.

Relatives and friends are invited to her viewing on Friday, April 29th from 3 pm – 7 pm. The funeral will be held on Saturday, April 30th at 11 am at Eutawville Community Funeral Home 440 Porcher Ave, Eutawville, SC 29048.
