Mary Gavin Life Reflections
The late Mary Jane Gavin, affectionately known as “May”, was born on May 1, 1948 in Eutawville, SC to the late Abraham and Ethel Lee Gibbs. She was given her heavenly crown on Friday, November 17, 2023 at the PruittHealth Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Bamberg, SC.
Mary moved to Boston in 1966, and after a few years of settling in, began a career as a nursing assistant. She was a prominent member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Dorchester, MA and would often bring her nieces and nephews to Sunday service and church events.
After living in Boston for over thirty years, Mary and her husband Henry, moved to Cross, SC in 1996. She was excited to move back to her home state where she enjoyed entertaining loved ones and friends, and spending countless hours nurturing her extensive collection of indoor and outdoor plants.
Mary worked for many years as a nursing assistant at the Omoo Nursing Home in Summerville, SC, and was truly adored by her patients and peers. Prior to her illness, she was an active member of Greater St. Paul United Methodist Church, and loved singing in the senior choir and participating in the women’s group.
Mary is preceded in death by her late husband, Henry Gavin; two brothers Nolan Gibbs, and Robert Gibbs; and her sister Rachel Gibbs.
She leaves to cherish her fond memories: her loving sister, Ernestine Johnson (Eric); brothers Isaac Gibbs and Willie Gibbs (Frances); stepchildren: Raymond Gavin, Desmond Campbell, Daryl Gavin and Sharon Banks, and a multitude of nieces, nephews, relatives, and close friends.
