Lizzie "Carrie" Mitchem the oldest of her siblings was born March 23rd, 1924 the late Nellie Green, and reared by her aunt and uncle The late Harper and Rebecca Middleton of Eutawville, SC Transitioned on Sunday June 5, 2022, at the home of her daughter.
She grew up in Eutawville, SC, and attended the school on the Walnut Grove Plantation, later continuing her learning from the Gillard Elementary School in Eutawville.
At an early age she joined the Silas UMC in Eutawville and served until she was join in marriage to the late Mr. Benjamin Mitchem and became a member of Unity Missionary Baptist Church. They were blessed with five children: Mabel Williams, Benjamin Mitchem Jr. (deceased), Robersine Singleton, (deceased) Harold Mitchem, and Moses Mitchem, (deceased).
She worked tireless in Unity in many organizations, but singing on the choirs was her most favorite, Her love for singing Hymns and songs never ceased-she sang until the very end. She along with other church members formed a gospel group called the Unity Gospel Singers, and they sang wherever they went. They were known for their special harmonious Golden voices.
Lizzie (Little Carrie) leaves the cherish her loving memory: her daughters, Mabel Williams, of Vance, SC., Martha Halls of Irvington, NJ., Son Harold Mitchem (Jennifer) of Baltimore, MD; Daughters-in-law, Louise Mitchem, Englewood, NJ.; and Mary D. Mitchem, of Eutawville, S.C. 22 Grands, 41 Great Grands. and 8 Great Great Grands. Her adopted family Mr. & Mrs. Walter Lee, Jr., Dan, Geneva "Pat" of Eutawville, SC; and Timothy (Marilyn) of Ridgeville, SC. Her lifelong friend and singing buddy, Mrs. Eloise Gillens, of Eutawville, SC. And a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
