Mr. Julius Peter Gathers, Sr., was born December 5, 1926, to the late Eddie and Mary Gathers-Smith. Dad peacefully transitioned to enteral rest on January 26. 2024, at his home surrounded by his family.
He grew up in Eutawville, and spent most of his time helping his dad with farming. Dad later joined the US Navy during WW11 where he served faithfully. Upon returning he married the late Maggie T, Gathers. Together they were blessed to raise eight children.
Dad took night classes allowing him to graduate the same year with his oldest son in 1972. He was employed by the Holly Hill Lumber Company, Dye Mill, and Georgia Pacific. Dad was also a life member of the NAACP, and for many years he served as Chaplin for Concerned Citizen #66 and the President of the Emancipation Proclamation. He was a loyal volunteer of the Eutawville Food Bank.
He accepted Christ at an early age at Silas United Methodist Church. Dad served the church faithfully as a leader. President of the Usher Board, Superintendent of SundaySchool, and a member of the Silas United Methodist Church Male and Senior Chorus. He was also a dedicated Jehavoh Lodge #351 (Free Mason) member.
A trail of fond memories and examples are left to provide inspiration and strength to his children, Rebecca (George) Nelson, Gracie Young, Katherine John, Raymond (Queen) Gathers, Doris Dantzler, Jeremiah (Iona) Gathers, Julius (Cheryl) P. Gathers, Jr., and Janice L. Gathers. He will also cherished by his daughter Betty Halls, and sons, Eddie (Jessie) Jefferson, Earnest (Vernell) Jones, and Amos (Barbara) Brown. He was loved dearly by his fifty grandchildren, ninety-three great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. As well, as four loving sisters-in-law, Mrs. Amanda Frazier, Mrs. Estelle (Paul) Brown, Mrs. Bernice Taste, and Mrs. Carrie B. Taste, and one brother-in-law, Mr. Moses Brown. Dad loved everyone and his love for the Lord just magnified his love for all of his nieces, nephews, and a host of other special relatives and friends. Please adhere to all COVID-19 precautions and guidelines when visiting the family and funeral home. Masks are NOT required but encouraged when visiting the family and funeral home.
