Mrs. Emma Johnson Broughton, the daughter of the late Joe and Rosa Lee Nesbit Johnson, was born on December 12, 1932, in Eutawville, SC. She was the third of twelve children, seven of whom preceded her in death. She entered into eternal rest on Monday, April 25, 2022, at her home surrounded by her six children.
She received her education in Orangeburg County Public School District. Early in her life, Emma became a member of the Unity Missionary Baptist Church where she served in various ministries. Her day began with a devotional prayer and scripture reading. She served faithfully as a member of the Sunday School #2 Choir, Senior Missionary, Old Ashley Missionary Ministry, Christian Burial Aide, and the Garden Gardenia Ministry. In addition, she was a 50+ years member of the Eutawville Chapter of the Eastern Star #324.
She was employed by Sears Roebuck and Company for over 20 years when she retired. After retirement, she extended her love of helping others by becoming a Senior Companion, helping care for the elderly in their homes. Emma'strue love included cultivating her farm, being an excellent cook, a caregiver, and a home provider.
In 1958, she married the love of her life, Joseph "Joe" Broughton, who preceded her in death in 2003. This union was blessed with six children. Emma leaves to cherish fond memories: Mary (Michael) Douglas of Lawrenceville, GA; Ruby Neomia "Dot" Broughton of the home; Deacon Willie (Mary) Broughton of Eutawville, SC; Josephine Wartel of Marietta, GA; Michael (Priscilla) Broughton of Aiken, SC; Alphonzo Broughton of Columbia, SC; and a bonus daughter, Deloris Broughton (Harry) Middleton. A loving son-in-law, MarkWartelof Douglasville, GA., and Thirteen grandchildren, Evita (William) McDaniels, Dominique Douglas, Jonae Wartel, Jocelyn Broughton, Christopher (Chanel) Douglas, Shambree Wartel, William Broughton, Michael Broughton, Jr., Dr.KimberlyBroughton, Justin Broughton, David (Ieshia) Humphrey, Philip Broughton, and Jonathan Broughton. Five great-grandchildren: Jayden & Julian Broughton, Korrin & Zuri Douglas, and Aeron Humphrey. Two bonus grandchildren: Lekisha Middleton and Harry Middleton, Jr, Two sisters: Rebecca Davis and Shelia Rivers, two brothers: Richard Johnson and Clarence Johnson, two sisters-in-law: Doris Johnson and Ruth Johnson, and one brother-in-law: Wendell Larrymore. She also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends who will always cherish her loving memories.
