Emily Doctor Broughton Life Reflections

"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."

Emily Doctor Broughton, daughter of the late Alfred and Freezie Drayton Doctor was born on February 7, 1931, in Eutawville, South Carolina.  She was the third of ten children, six of whom preceded her in death. She entered into eternal rest on Friday, February 17, 2023, at White Oak Manor in North Charleston, South Carolina. 

Emily lived a life of service towards others. She received her education in Orangeburg County District and was employed by the Connors family for over 50 years. Early in life, Emily gave her life to the Lord.  She became a member of Unity Missionary Baptist Church where she faithfully served in various ministries which included Sunday School Teacher, member of the Junior and Senior Choir, Senior Missionary, and Old Ashley Missionary Ministry. Her dedication and commitment to ministry emanated from her true and unwavering love of God. In 2007, she was recognized and awarded Mother of the Year, a recognition she deeply cherished. Additionally, she was a member of The Jehovah Chapter #203 Order of the Eastern Star for over fifty-five years.

Emily was a people person. She loved to love on her family and friends. She enjoyed cooking and feeding anyone who came to her house. It was understood by all you wouldn't leave her house without being fed or taking something with you. She was truly a giving person who operated with a spirit of gratitude. Her life was a living example of Ephesians 4:32 — “And be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving one another, just as God also forgave you in Christ.”

In 1963 she married the love of her life, Sharlow Broughton, Jr. They were married for over 55 years. They were blessed with five children, eight grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Emily was a doting wife and mother, and she especially cherished the role of grandmother.

Emily leaves to cherish fond memories: her children: Robert (Dorothy) Hall of Newark, NJ, Julia Broughton of  Hamden, CT, Alfred (Kimberly) Broughton of Houston, TX, and Kenneth (Dr. Monica) Broughton of Pearland, TX; three sisters: Pastor Rosa Davis and Minister Jannie Carter of Hamden, CT; and Essaline (Lewis) Williams of Fort Lauderdale, Florida; seven sisters-in-law: Betty Doctor of New Haven, CT; Christine and Lillie Doctor both of Eutawville, SC, Earline Broughton of St. Petersburg,  FL; Sarah (William) Barbour of Philadelphia, PA; Rachel Broughton of Florida; and Estelle (Harry) Davis of Eutawville, SC; grandchildren, Sharhonda (Rev. Jerry) Elmore Rivers, Kenteshee Gillard (James Fogle); Delicia (Nicholas) Ealey, Hope (Dior) Ashford; Erica Gethers, Jeremiah Broughton, Mya Broughton, and Camille Broughton; great-grandchildren: Jerry Jayden Rivers III, Chloe Payton Ashford, James Ahmad Fogle, Joelle Arielle Rivers, and Londyn Ealey; one God sister, Ruby Danner; one aunt, Bernice Doctor; three God children, Florence Jefferson, Lynette Simmons-Davis, and George Hall. She leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends to cherish her memory and spirit forever.

Emily was preceded in death by her husband, Sharlow Broughton Jr.; daughter, Martha Gillard; her mother and father, Alfred and Freezie Doctor; five brothers: John Geathers, Leroy Doctor, Alfred Doctor, Jr., Joe William Doctor, and Charles Doctor; and a sister, Maeliza Doctor.
