Earline Broughton Obituary

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Ms. Earline Broughton, 100, formerly of Cross, South Carolina, who transitioned on Friday, January 5, 2024, at the residence of her daughter, Mr. & Mrs. Jim & Celia Martin in St. Petersburg, Florida. 

Mrs. Earlene was born October 10, 1923, to William Pralour and Celia Oliver in Blackbranch, South Carolina.  She was adopted and raised by Dora Brown. At 10 years of age, Earlene gave her life to Christ and united with Unity Baptist Church, which became a haven where she served as part of the Senior Missionaries, the Senior and Number Two choir, the Old Ashley Association Missionary, the Home Mission, the Christian Burial Aid, a founding member of the Garden Gardenias, and she was a part of the kitchen committee for over 50 years. Snook, as she was affectionately known, was educated in the Eutawville County School system. Earlene married her one and love, Joseph Broughton on January 9, 1944. A nurturer at her best, Earlene cared for and helped raided numerous children in addition to her own. Earlene had special culinary talents. Sweet potato pies, pound cakes, biscuits, tomato and okra soup. collard greens, macaroni and cheese, just to name a few are legendary. Anyone who needed a meal could find one at her table. She was an excellent seamstress who made all her children's clothes as well as the quilts that kept them warm at night. Her wisdom and life lessons have shaped so many lives. Earlene's deep faith and unwavering trust in God have been a guiding light and everlasting legacy for her family.

Earlene is survived by her four children- daughters, Celia Martin (Jim), and Lucille Batts, and sons David Oliver (Andrean), and Anthony Oliver (Dee);  her grandchildren- Neila Brooks (Steven), Beverly Broughton, Darlaine Scott-McCoy (Josh), Dwayne Hamlett, Kark Allen 9Stephanie), Cimonee reed (Chris), Devonte Martin, David Oliver, 111 (Emily), Lee Oliver, Hyida Biglow, Jordan Oliver, and Matthew Oliver. Her great-grandchildren- Kaylan Hamlett, Treyshaun Broughton, Nia Brooks, Jordan Brooks, Joy Allen, Brandon Broughton, Heaven McCoy, Bishop Allen, Tayden Reed, and Azalia Reed; three sisters-in-law- Sarah Barbaur (William), Estelle Davis (Gerald), Rachel Broughton; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and relatives. Earlene was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Ernest Broughton, and her daughter, Julia Scott, son, Eugene Oliver, sisters, Mary Ravenell, Dora Peters, and Beulah West (Louis), and brothers George Wright, Melvin Pralour, and Cain Ravenell (Albertha).
