Arthur White

December 1, 1941 ~ April 13, 2021 (age 79)

Arthur “Banks” White entered into Eternity on Tuesday, April 13, 2021 at the Orangeburg Regional Medical Center. Born on February 22, 1944 in Santee, SC to his biological parents, George and Ida Bell Graten White. Arthur was blessed, nurtured, and loved unconditionally by his God-sent, surrogate family: Willie and Ruth Martin and 10 siblings in Holly Hill, SC.

A hard-working, courageous young man, “Banks” graduated from Roberts High School in 1964 where he excelled in academics and sports. He, along with his brother James, chose a higher learning opportunity at Voorhees College in Denmark, SC.  Arthur completed his four-year program and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Social Studies in 1968.

In 1969, Arthur moved to Brooklyn, NY to begin his work career. He continued his advanced study at New York University and held several jobs before becoming an executive with the Boy Scouts of America. He made a home in NY and married his hometown sweetheart, Lillian Dingle, in 1970. Their union was blessed by a daughter, Keshia, in May 1971.

Arthur moved to Atlanta, GA in 1979 where he reconnected with his college love and friend, Gracie Hunter. They were wed in 1980 and welcomed another daughter, Kimberly Jeynelle, in August 1981. He affectionately called both girls “Daddy’s Buddy” and he was proud and gratified by their love and achievement. Keshia and Kimberly became the center of his joy.

For a time, Arthur lived and worked in St. Petersburg, FL before returning to Holly Hill to embark on his retirement journey. He developed many interests over the years. “Banks” enjoyed riding his 10-speed bike, gardening, and cooking. He loved to read, play cards, watch sports, and mentor young men. He also appreciated opportunities to engage in spirited conversations about religion, headline news and politics.

Arthur was preceded in death by his parents, Willie and Ruth Martin and George and Ida White; daughter, Kimberly J. White; brothers: Charles and Paul Martin, Gene White, and George White Jr.; sisters: Mildred M. Riley and Demetria White Guess; and brothers-in-law, Mitchum Banks, Frank Riley Jr., and Daniel Green.
