Leon Jones

January 27, 1939 ~ May 7, 2019 (age 80)

Leon Jones, 80, passed away on Tuesday, May 7, 2019. He was born on January 27, 1939 in Cross, South Carolina to the late Rosa Mae Jones and the late James Jervey Bennett.

He moved to The Bronx, New York in 1960 and moved back home to Cross, South Carolina in 1990. He retired in 1990 from his employment as a Construction Worker in New York City. He took pride in showing his girls the skyscraper buildings he helped construct. 

He was a man who knew it all and was a walking family history encyclopedia. He enjoyed cooking, farming, and R&B music.  He was a “My Way” or the “Highway” type of man. Mr. Jones was known as “PAW,” “Poppa Jones,” “The Creeper,” “Crime Watcher,” and “Security Guard” .

Leon was preceded in death by his parents, his 6 siblings, Alonzo Jones, Elaine Drayton, Joe Louis Jones, Mariah (Dot) Athenias, Naomi Johnson, and Darryl Bennett; and a grandson, Lionel, son of Yvette. 

He leaves to cherish his memories: his loving wife of 58 years, Mable (Gee) Whitten Jones; his four daughters, Carolyn Suzette White (Barry), Yvette Jones, Denise Williams (Bruce), and Leona Jones; 6 grandchildren, Eduardo, Jahida, Olgita, Veronica, Quinnell, and Brandon; 12-great grandchildren; his sisters and brothers, Henry Drayton, Mary and Martha Jones,  Bennett family siblings - Emma (Micki), Ruth, Margie, Barbara, James Jr., Michael, Patricia, and Lorai; mother-in-law, Vergie Mae Whitten; 7 sisters-in-law; 7 brothers-in-law; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
