Evangelist Mary Wearing Obituary

Evangelist Mary Lee Wearing, the daughter of the late Aileen Capers and George Washington Jr., was born March 4, 1948, in Holly Hill, SC.  She was raised by her grandmother the late Mrs. Lettie “Top” Washington. Evangelist Wearing entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, June 5, 2019, at Trident Medical Center, N. Charleston, SC.

Evangelist Mary Lee Wearing grew up and attended the public schools in Holly Hill, SC.  She was a true Proverbs 31 woman, a Godly homemaker, caring for her family all of her life.

She was united in holy matrimony to the late Johnnie Wearing, Jr. on March 28, 1965.  This union was blessed with five children.

Evangelist Mary Lee Wearing accepted Christ at an early age. Her Christian walked began at Lovely Hill Baptist Church, Holly Hill, SC, under the leadership of Reverend Road. There at Lovely Hill she was the lead singer of The Washalettes, under the direction of her grandfather, the late George Washington, Sr.  The Washalettes blessed many lives with their angelic voices as they traveled from church to church on Sunday evenings.  Evangelist Wearing had a love and passion for lifting up the name of the Lord through songs; however, God had more for her to do.  As the Lord continued to touch her heart, she joined Brooks Temples of Holly Hill, SC under the leadership of Elder Brooks, and here she received the Gift of the Holy Spirit. Matthew 5:16, says “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” Evangelist Wearing was on a mission for the Lord, touching the lives of everyone that she encountered and making a difference.  As her ministry began to bloom, she knew that God had set her apart for a higher calling, Evangelist Wearing answered her evangelistic call.  Over the years Evangelist Wearing mission for the Lord was rooted and surely grounded in the word of the Lord.  During a time when her ministry was not accepted; she never gave up, she kept her eyes on the mark of the high calling of God.  As God continued to use her and elevate her, she worshipped at State Temple, Holly Hill, SC under the leadership of Bishop Willie L. Howell, where she served faithfully.  She later became a founding member of Greater Faith Temple, Dorchester, SC, under the leadership of Chief Apostle Clyde Smith. At Greater Faith Temple, she and her late husband were a vital part of the building of this ministry spiritually and physically.  Evangelist Wearing later joined Greater Deliverance Tabernacle, Holly Hill, SC under the spiritual leadership of Pastor Essie Lou Smalls and Overseer Henry E. Dixon.  Here she served 10 years as the Pastor’s Aide Board President.  She led the merge of their Pastor’s Aide Board with the Pastor Aide League Board of Holly Hill.

Evangelist Wearing was very influential in the evangelical circle throughout the state of South Carolina.  Her faith, dedication, and commitment led many of her family members and friends to accept Christ as their Lord and Savior.  She was a trailblazer for many women who came behind her.  Her powerful spirit filled teachings, preaching, and singing touched the lives of many.  As she traveled proclaiming the good news of Jesus Christ for over 40 years, she preached in over 63 churches.

Evangelist Wearing loved her family and was devoted to them and her church.  She ensured that she instilled in her children, her sisters, her brothers, and so many others, to always put Jesus Christ first.  For they will cherish her memories and will always remember her favorite sayings:  “If it’s the Lord’s will; If we are going to pray about it, don’t worry about it, because worrying about it will cancel out the prayer; and lastly “I don’t know what the day holds, but I know who holds the day.”

Evangelist Wearing was preceded in death by:  one son, Johnnie Lee Wearing; one brother, Robert Washington; and her in-laws Johnny (Mary Jane) Waring.

She leaves to cherish her loving memories: four children whom she loved unconditionally, Arthur Alexander Wearing, of the home; Willa Reese (Leroy) Anderson,  Eric (Sharekia) Wearing and Carl (Latonya) Wearing, all of Holly Hill, SC; three brothers: Jimmy (Charlene) Washington of Columbia, SC, Leroy (Catherine) Butler of Holly Hill, SC, and ChazeHarrison, Jr. of St. George, SC; two sisters: Caroline W. (Betty Lee) Waring, Nathaniel Waring, both of Holly Hill, SC, and James Fuller of Charlotte, NC; four sisters-in-law: Delephine Weldon, Martha Isaac, and Sarah Anderson, all of Holly Hill, SC, and Jacqueline Fuller of Rock Hill, SC; a very special aunt: Ruthie Mae Green, of Holly Hill, SC; eight grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends who will miss her dearly.
